The Basic Supplies for Making Tealight Candles
Required:
- Wax melting kit
An inexpensive double boiler setup that prevents the wax from reaching dangerously high temperatures. Also includes a thermometer and stir sticks. - 127°F - 130°F melt point paraffin wax.
A low melt point wax is recommended for making tealight candles. - Wick.
The wick you choose depends on your wax formula. We have pre-tabbed and bulk wicks available for tealights. Waxed wick is recommended. - Tealight cups.
Inexpensive aluminum cups for making tealight candles. - Wick clips/tabs.
Needed only for bulk wick; pre-tabbed wicks come with them. These metal discs hold the wick upright during the last couple of hours of burning.
Recommended:
- Additives
Most popular for tealights are Vybar 260 and stearic powder (regular or vegetable). Our additives page explains what they do and recommends how much to use. No additives are necessary if using the 127°F melt point wax. - Dye.
Dozens of colors to choose from! Be sure to select a dye instead of a pigment for solid color throughout the candle, as pigments can clog the wick. - Scent.
Everyone's favorite candle ingredient! Recommended usage is 1/4 - 1 ounce of scent per pound of wax.
Average start up cost:
- Approximately $80, plus shipping cost.
- Estimate includes all Required and Recommended items above, with 10-11 lbs. paraffin wax, and multiple 2 oz. scents and dyes.
- Makes at least 250 tealight candles.
Also consider:
- Tealight holders.
While attractive on their own, tealights look much better burning inside of a nice holder.
